3kVA UPS with 30-minute battery backup for small testing equipment
Small testing equipment may not require a large UPS, but stable and continuous power can still be important during operation. For this application, a BLAZING POWER 3kVA online UPS with a rated output power of 2700W was configured with an external battery bank and a separate battery cabinet to provide approximately 30 minutes of backup time.
Why use a 3kVA UPS?
Small testing instruments, laboratory equipment and some medical testing devices can be affected by an unexpected power interruption. If utility power fails during operation, an ongoing test may be interrupted.
For this reason, UPS sizing should consider more than the normal operating power of the equipment. Rated power, maximum power, startup characteristics and required backup time should all be checked before selecting the UPS.
For this project, a 3kVA / 2700W UPS was selected to support the connected testing equipment.
External batteries for approximately 30 minutes of backup
The application required approximately 30 minutes of battery backup, so an external battery configuration was used. The batteries are installed in a separate battery cabinet next to the UPS.
Compared with a small internal battery pack, an external battery system is more suitable when longer runtime is required. A separate cabinet also makes battery installation, wiring, inspection and future replacement more convenient.
Actual UPS runtime depends on the connected load, battery capacity, battery condition, discharge current and UPS efficiency. Therefore, the battery capacity should always be calculated according to the actual load rather than assuming that every 3kVA UPS will provide the same runtime.
Suitable for small critical loads
A 3kVA online UPS can be used with small testing equipment, laboratory instruments, monitoring systems, servers and other critical devices that should not shut down unexpectedly.
For these applications, choosing a UPS is not simply a matter of matching the “3kVA" rating. Actual load power, peak power and required backup time are the key parameters for selecting both the UPS and its battery system.
