Echion and Proper Voltage Plan 1.6 MW UPS Rack for AI Data Centers

Echion and Proper Voltage announced on October 12 that they had signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a UPS system for AI data centers. According to Echion’s announcement, the proposed VaultX system would combine Echion’s XNO battery technology with Proper Voltage’s Vault platform.

The companies describe a 1.6 MW UPS rack with 84 kWh of energy capacity and 480 V or 800 V configurations. They intend it to provide both short-term outage protection and buffering for rapid changes in AI computing demand. The announcement concerns a planned product; it does not report a completed customer deployment.

The distinction between power and energy matters when evaluating such equipment. A 1.6 MW rating describes the stated power capability, while 84 kWh describes the stated energy capacity. Dividing the two gives about 3.15 minutes at full rated power as a theoretical figure. Actual backup time depends on usable battery energy, conversion losses, operating limits and the load profile.

AI facilities should therefore evaluate more than a single runtime figure. Relevant questions include how often the battery can charge and discharge at high power, how the UPS responds to repeated load changes, and how the system integrates with the facility’s electrical design.

For comparison with an established equipment category, buyers can review a modular data center UPS cabinet. Its specifications and application should be assessed separately from the proposed VaultX system.
