Multi-Chemistry UPS Batteries: Schneider Electric's New Smart-UPS and the Industrial Perspective

Schneider Electric's new multi-chemistry APC Smart-UPS platform highlights a development in backup power design: allowing customers to choose between compatible valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) and lithium-ion batteries without replacing the main UPS unit.

In an official announcement dated October 8, 2026, Schneider Electric described its next-generation Smart-UPS platform and the SRTD On-Line series, initially offered in 2.2 kVA and 3 kVA models.

Although these products target distributed IT and edge computing environments, the announcement raises a broader engineering question for industrial users: what should be checked before changing UPS battery technology?

What Schneider Electric announced

According to Schneider Electric, the new Smart-UPS platform supports compatible VRLA and lithium-ion battery packs on the same UPS platform, without replacing the main UPS unit when switching between supported battery technologies.

The company also plans to support additional battery chemistries as approved products become available.

According to the announcement, the initial SRTD On-Line models are designed for servers and networking equipment in medical facilities, light industrial environments and IT installations.

Schneider Electric reports improvements in backup runtime, power density and outlet availability compared with previous products. These are manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independent test results for every configuration.

Why battery compatibility matters beyond small UPS systems

Battery replacement is a routine part of UPS lifecycle management. However, switching from lead-acid to lithium-ion technology involves more than matching battery voltage.

Electrical and operational compatibility must be evaluated across the complete UPS and battery system.

Key considerations include:

  • UPS DC bus voltage and allowable operating range
  • Charger design and charging parameters
  • Battery management system communication
  • DC circuit protection and fault isolation
  • Temperature limits and installation conditions
  • Required backup duration under the actual load

A UPS originally designed for lead-acid batteries should not be assumed to support lithium-ion batteries unless the manufacturer has approved the complete configuration.

BLAZING POWER perspective: Industrial UPS requirements are different

The new APC Smart-UPS platform shows how battery flexibility can be incorporated into UPS product design.

For larger three-phase industrial UPS installations, however, battery selection forms part of a broader electrical engineering assessment.

For BLAZING POWER's low-frequency UPS systems, load characteristics, output isolation, DC battery voltage, charging arrangements and backup duration must be considered together.

A built-in output isolation transformer does not establish battery compatibility. Likewise, matching the nominal DC voltage alone does not make two battery technologies interchangeable.

For industrial users, the priority is to select a manufacturer-approved battery configuration that matches the UPS design, operating conditions and required autonomy.

What UPS operators should review

Before replacing an existing UPS battery system, operators should confirm the manufacturer's approved battery specifications and whether the intended battery technology is supported.

Charger compatibility, battery monitoring, protection coordination, ambient temperature and load-dependent runtime should all be part of the review.

For a new UPS installation, future battery compatibility should be considered during procurement rather than assumed after installation.

BLAZING POWER supplies low-frequency UPS systems and sealed lead-acid batteries for industrial and critical power applications.
