SGC Energy said on 8 September that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Vertiv covering the AI data centre it is developing in Gunsan, South Korea.

The interesting part is not the capacity. It is what is going inside the fence.

Vertiv plans to deploy PowerNexus at the site — the first deployment of the system in South Korea. Instead of delivering the UPS and the switchgear separately and integrating them entirely on site, PowerNexus ships as one factory-assembled block that combines a high-capacity UPS and system switchgear.

For anyone who buys, specifies or maintains UPS systems, that shift deserves more attention than another megawatt headline.

2. What an integrated block changes

A conventional build separates the power chain: transformer, switchgear, UPS, distribution, batteries. Each piece arrives on its own and gets connected by whoever is running the site.

PowerNexus collapses two of those into one factory-built block. Vertiv puts the gain at up to 70% faster deployment and up to 20% lower installation cost. Those are the vendor's own figures, and no baseline published alongside them — faster than what, measured how, at what capacity, is not stated. Treat them as a claim to test, not a number to design against.

The consequence matters more than the percentages. Once the UPS and the switchgear leave the factory as one assembly, the interface between them stops being a site decision and becomes a product decision. Factory conditions beat a container on a muddy plot, so that is mostly good. It also moves responsibility: who publishes the short-circuit rating for the combined assembly, who proves protective selectivity, what happens to the warranty when the block meets equipment it was never tested with. Ask before delivery, not during commissioning.

3. Three questions to ask before buying a block

Can the UPS section be isolated without dropping the load? A maintenance bypass lets a technician de-energise the power electronics while the load stays up. If it sits outside the block, the switchboard layout has to allow for it, and that is easier to design in than to add later.

Will it fit, and where do the batteries sit? A factory-built block is wide, tall and heavy, and the route the cables take after it lands is a site constraint, not a product specification — access is the most common reason a modular design loses the schedule it was supposed to protect. Blocks that carry batteries inside them also put a five-to-ten-year wearing component in the same enclosure as equipment expected to run far longer.

How does it grow, and who owns the interface? Gunsan goes 60 MW to 300 MW on paper. Growing a block-based design means adding blocks, and the DC bus configuration decides whether added capacity parallels cleanly or forces a re-cut of the distribution. Single-supplier integration is only an advantage if one party accepts responsibility for the behaviour of the whole assembly — get that in writing, with the test reports behind it.

What to send a supplier before you ask for a price

A project like this starts with a load list, not a product code. Send the load type and any inrush or step-load behaviour, actual and peak load in kW, input and output voltage with phase configuration, required runtime at a stated load, redundancy architecture (single unit, parallel, N+1 or 2N), site constraints including access route, floor loading, ambient temperature and altitude, and what a second phase has to connect to.
